Help about installing the Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
on 64 bits Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
on 64 bits Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Problems with Java? Use Pale Moon instead of Firefox or Chrome!

Install Pale Moon (version 29.4.1 64 bits in this demo).

Install JRE (version jre1.8.0_261 64 bits; i. e. download jre-8u261-linux-x64.tar.gz) in the /usr/java directory.

For Pale Moon, create the following symbolic link (being "root"):
ln -s /usr/java/jre1.8.0_261/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libnpjp2.so
(On 64 bits Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, if the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory does not exist just create it)

Run the jcontrol binary to modify the security of java (being "root"), and add the two q4md-forcefieldtools web sites in the list of known web sites as shown in the picture below:
/usr/java/jre1.8.0_261/bin/jcontrol

Restart Pale Moon after installing JRE.

You can now test if JRE is well configured for Pale Moon by clicking here. You should get the following results on 64 bits Ubuntu 18.04 LTS:
(It looks like this link does not work on 64 bits Ubuntu 22.04 LTS)

By now, Java Applets written for Jmol are displayed by Pale Moon: click here, here or here to look at example (and read FAQ 19 for more information).

IMPORTANT: Starting from 8u271 (i. e. jre1.8.0_271), the files of the Java plugin responsible for integration and interaction with a browser (in particular the libnpjp2 library) is not part of the JRE distribution on Linux, Solaris, and MacOS platforms anymore. Thus one has to keep using the old 8u261 version.

IMPORTANT: The Firefox and Google browsers (among many others) no longer support the NPAPI technology required for Java applets because of security issues. Thus using the old libnpjp2 library with Jmol is strongly discouraged!

On the contrary, Javascript Applets written for JSmol are displayed within any browser without any need of JRE installation. Click for instances here, here or here (and read FAQ 20 for more information).
